A week after I theorized that .eth names could be monetized by placing affiliate links or ads in the ENS profile manager and enabling that data to reach across potentially hundreds of sites where ENS profile data is pulled and displayed automatically, Unstoppable Domains implemented their own version of this very thing.
According to their announcement, “Blue subscribers can earn cash for the domains they sell through their profile. Opt into displaying a dedicated section advertising domains for purchase, and for each domain sold, you’ll get a cut of the proceeds.”
Presumably this only means a user’s profile on the UD official website, but I am waiting to find out for sure. In my original vision with affiliate marketing with ENS, I explained how a link or ad could be automatically displayed across hundreds or thousands of web pages, maximizing the exposure across platforms, not just in one place.
On July 29, I wrote:
“Most people think of .eth names as wallet addresses but in this case, the name has become actual digital real estate on the web and search. If nick.eth sells his name, the buyer inherits all the web properties connected to it! The buyer can now monetize those pages with links, ads, or any other creative concept. “
I think it will be worth keeping an eye on how UD implements this as monetization of web3 usernames is a hot topic right now.
